THE ORIGIN OF VALENTINE'S DAY

Everybody knows Valentine’s Day but… does everybody know what it really means and where it comes from?
Some of you might think it’s an invention of the malls. Unfortunately for the first time it’s not, this festivity has its origins, although we have different versions of it.

There are different theories about this celebration, but it seems that the Valentinus one is the most common one.
It was a 14th of February of the year 270 when a man named Valentinus was martyred for marrying young soldiers. During Claudius II Empire, this Christian priest married young soldiers with their young ladies. That’s the reason why Valentinus is currently the patron saint of lovers.

Claudius thought young soldiers with no family bonds were better soldiers than the bonded ones. That’s why Valentinus ideas were against his interests and he was sent to prison. Although he tried to convince Claudius to become Christian and he cured the blindness of an official’s daughter named Julia, he finally was martyred and executed a 14th of Februray of 270.

To remember him, Julia planted an almond tree next to Valentinus grave which will become a lover’s symbol later on.

However, the most well-known celebration is on the Feb. 14, some other countries celebrate it other days. In most of the South-American countries it is held in summer.

Other no Christian countries have taken advantage of this celebration as a consumerism celebration. That’s the Japanese case: one of the chocolates company in this country introduced this festivity. But in this case women are who give a gift to men. It doesn’t really matter if he is your lover, your father or your mate, but take into account that to your lover you should give as a present the most special chocolate for you. As a reward a month later, on 14th of March men give as a gift something white (white chocolate, underwear clothes…) to women, it is known as the White Day.

And why is Cupid involved in Valentine’s Day? Here it comes another theory. History says it was an ancient festivity in honor of Eros (for Greeks) and later on called Cupid for the Romans. In this case, it’s the other way round, a pagan celebration was turned into a Christian celebration. People asked for God favors, related to love, giving him presents and oblations.

Nowadays, we have a mixed and confused story based in the Valentinus one but with symbols of the Cupid one.

However they are not the only versions of the lovers’ day, in Northern countries is the period when birds match  and reproduce. It is said that lovers took this date as a love and creation symbol.

We find many kinds of versions for this day, but the summary is whatever the origin of this celebration is, it’s always a pleasure share your love with your loved ones.

And don’t hesitate to tell us your own country version… ;)

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

YOUR DEAREST WISH WILL COME TRUE THIS YEAR OF THE SNAKE

If you didn’t have time to ask for your wishes at New Year’s Eve, let the fortune cookies predict them for you. Or even better make your own fortune sentences and share luck with everybody.
Once you’ve already chosen your fortune sentences, it’s time to make the cookies. It’s true, you can bake them, but we are so fans of paper and cardboard handmade that we can’t resist making them of these materials.

What we need:
Colour papers, Scissors, Pencil, Glue, Something round about 10cm of diameter, such as a rounded lid

Mark the outline of the round object on the colour paper, or you can use a compass to do it if you are more precise and mathematic. Make the circles you wish. The more you draw, the more fortune you’ll have ;)

Once it’s done, bend it half way and push with your finger at the centre, as you pretend to get together the opposite sides of the circles. You can see it properly on the image below. Once the mark is done, glue this central part.

And ready to eat… I mean ready to open! ;)

Do you have everything ready to celebrate the Year of the Snake this Sunday? We have a great combination of boxes ready for our guests. The Chinese noodles box it will be the ‘must’ of the party.

And you, are you ready for this reptile year?

MADLY IN LOVE WITH SELFPACKAGING

SelfPackaging has a box for each occasion: for Christmas you have the box in the shape of a star, for Easter the rabbit one… Then we considered that another special occasion as Valentine’s Day should have a proper box. That can not be another thing that a heart to melt somebody else’s heart down.

As always, the inner part is up to you (chocolates, jewellery, might it be a special ring?), and about the outer part… let us share with you some ideas…

What we need:

- Colour papers: Sorry, for Valentine’s Day, we can’t avoid it, the main colour is pink.
- Glue
- Pencil
- Scissors

Once you have everything, let’s start. Take one of the colour papers -I think you don’t have any other chance, it’s pink- and draw a spiral on it. Then, cut it and, from the centre to the outside, blend the paper in spiral shape as well (hard to explain, easy to see on the below pictures).

Put glue at the back, the smallest part, and repeat the sequence the times you wish, or the times you need to make all the items to cover your box.

Here you are, our lovely box ready to give it as a love present. You have, at the same time, a bouquet of flowers and a nice heart ;)

We mixed the Valentine’s pink with shades of ‘nude’ and brown which give the box a ‘romantic’ look.

If you don’t have so much time or you don’t want to spend it on that issue, you can use the same technique to reproduce that cute heart in a smaller scale as we did. You know we are cord fans… some cord around the box to give it a ‘handmade look’ and labels with love messages or if you don’t have enough hearts yet, cut one label in heart shape.

Ok, let’s stop talking about hearts, you also use this paper technique we show you to decorate a box, using it as a motive: small bouquets of flowers on the box corners and the well-know cord and label decoration.

Super ready to see your ideas and what you’re going to put inside. We love ‘romantic presents’.

Happy early Valentine’s Day!

OH BABY!

New year, new illusions, new dreams…
Have you made a list with your good intentions for this year? We always try to accomplish all of them, but always, at least, there’s one missing.

What are your plans for 2013? Any good news: wedding, a baby is coming… If the answer is yes, we give you few favours to handle in your special event. So, another thing not to worry about anymore.

If the good piece of news is a baby delivery, we suggest you some baptism ideas.
What does everybody love? Easy to answer, sweets! Well, sometimes we hate it because of the calories we gain with it, but from time to time it is a good pleasure.

If it’s a boy, you can choose the light blue box (Ref. 1504) and fill it with cookies with blue motives to match with it. We chose two hearts, a T-shirt and a flower cookie. If it’s a baby girl and you follow the colour traditions, no worries. We’ve got plenty of colours for you on our website… We have all the rainbow range and much more for you.

The cover can be decorated as we did. Cut some small triangle pieces in different prints and stick them on laces to pretend to be banderols. A loving message on the box, always help.

But if your mind is more squared, we have the ideal box for you, (Ref. 1506_S). Cut a label, print a message on it (for example the name of your baby and the date of birth), decorate it and wrap the box with cord… et.. voilĂ … You have another baptism favour ready.

Put inside whatever you want, we’re sure you have some great ideas to provide us… We give you the packaging, and you bring us the imagination. Good deal! ;)
So, we’ll show you another option, our small pillow box (Ref.1614). We cut two types of labels and decorated them different: one in stripes and the other one with a baby bottle, and both of them decorated with a two-cloured laces.

Send us your baptism favours pics! And Congratulations for your future baby birth this 2013!
